Uploaded content includes film and TV clips, music videos and home-made videos.
Initially, there was no limit on the length of videos that could be uploaded. However, as the majority of the longer videos were illegally shared copyrighted content, a time limit of 10 minutes was set, which was increased to 15 minutes in the summer of 2010, citing advances in algorithms to detect copyrighted content, and then removed in December 2010 for users who had not previously committed copyright infringement or otherwise violated the site's policies. In addition, copyrighted material from illegal sources is no longer necessarily deleted, but simply registered so that the rights holders can benefit from the revenue from the associated advertising.
